Bibles, Books & Music
The Bible
The Bible is the sacred text of Christianity. It is our number one bestseller. Translation of the
Bible from traditional
Latin texts into English, began with John Wycliffe in the 14th century. Today, at the beginning of the 21st century,
the Bible has been translated into over 2,000 of the world's 6,500 languages, comes in many versions and specialty
compilations, and is published in every medium from paperback, hardcover and leather bindings, to CD, DVD, CD-ROM and MP3.
It is not as simple as it once was to purchase a Bible, but it is essential for each of us to study God's Word. It is our
specialty to help you find the Bible that is right for you.
The Books
During the first centuries of the church and long into our history, most Christians could not read.
Only the wealthy
could afford books. Over the last several centuries, the practice of spiritual reading, or lectio divina as it was termed
by our ancestors, has been made accessible through better education and the invention of the printing press.
Eugene Peterson asserts that "spiritual reading refers not to the content of what is read but to the way in which a
book is read. Spiritual reading does not mean reading on spiritual or religious subjects, but reading any book that
comes to hand in a spiritual way, which is to say, listening to the Spirit, alert to intimations of God." As Christians we
must continually examine ourselves. Part of our challenge must be to look at what we read to ourselves and to our
children, and why.
The Music
Music is an important means through which we praise and worship God. It is a means through
which artists can
express their faith through God given talent. Particular styles of music provide us with a sense of belonging in our
communities. Our music departments at Hull's can help you discover everything from Gregorian Chants and majestic
hymns to contemporary Christian music and the hip bands of today. Ask our Music Managers for assistance!
